Musings...

Living up to the name of the blog, my musings for the day- more of a rambling really ;o)
I don't know about you, but the sunny (yet very cold) weather we had lately really gets me in the mood to change things in this household of ours (Spring fever anyone?). Some just affect me, for others the family has to pull together. It's been over 5 years now, that we moved from Germany to Canada and a lot has happened since. For most parts we've been really blessed and our life here is coming together as hoped in one way or the other. We applied for our Canadian Citizenship this month and if all goes well hopefully get it in about 2 years!
Normally I should be able to pinpoint where all this wish for change is coming from, but I can't say it was just one thing. For a person not believing in New Years resolutions I'm sure putting a lot on my plate this month ;).
Food: I got the proverbial kick in the butt watching a couple of documentaries about food on Netflix recently. (Food Inc., Hungry for Change, Farmageddon) Being a family of 5 living on a much lower income then what we are used to a couple of years back, I tend to buy our food staples in big box stores by watching for sales on basics, meat, dairy and all the other goodies one tends to think we should buy for ourselves and the rest of the clan. After watching those (mostly US related) films I had the urging need to watch closer what I put in my shopping cart, like I used to at one point earlier in our family life. Aside from these unpronounceable ingredients that are made by an industry that cares more about my buck then my health, there were some scenes that really grossed me out. I.e. cattle that gets only corn as feed, stands knee deep in their own manure (risk of causing E.coli among other sicknesses) on so called pastures that reach father then the eye can see - not something I want on my plate! Trying to live the "waste not, want not" attitude more as well, what's in the house will get used, but new purchases will be monitored closer. Did you know an American family throws an average of $600 worth of food in the garbage a year (don't see us there, but we could be doing better)? I can buy local grass feed beef and chicken in my area year around and really should do so! As long as there is no law to label GMO ingredients I rather get my food locally as much as I can. Yes, it will most likely cost more, money that has to be cut elsewhere (not throwing food out, bake and cook even more from scratch as I already do, try new to us recipes with food that is in season would be steps in that direction). The long term health costs resulting from my current choice of cooking could be more then we bargain for if I don't get us to change. "You are what you eat" - well, I know for sure I don't want to be garbage! I found a couple of blogs that a related to a lifestyle that I hope to adapt, that actually give me the hope that it can be done on a budget (Real Food-Real Frugal, Frugally Sustainable and The Backyard Farm Connection are some of them) . The dream of living sustainable, maybe even on a small homestead, is nothing new to Mr. H. and me....Homesteading can be done in urban areas too, not just in the middle of nowhere, which would be far from practical regarding work for us now. And in "old" age I don't want to make a day trip just to see a doctor either.
General: decluttering (household, computer, life), renovating and rearranging is my usual "Spring thing"- that I already started gives me hope. I've been having this "brain fog" and lack of motivation for too long now! I hope with living healthier that this will be gone for good, wish me luck.
Fitness: as Mr. H. so rightfully predicted our treadmill downstairs gets barely used. So exercise is another topic that must move further up in my (our) list of priorities. If I drop some weight along with getting rid of all these bad habits it will be appreciated, but I don't count on it.
To avoid the whole process from being too overwhelming I will take it one step at a time, this is the only life in the only body I've been given. After nearly 45 years it's time to appreciate it to the fullest!
My regret is that I haven't started this journey sooner, so that my beautiful daughter could do it alongside the rest of us. The challenge is to stick with the plan and make the guys enjoy it too! Mr. H. was all for it so far let's see how it holds up in reality.
Let me know if you have any great tips for me please, my learning curve has just started!

Have an awesome rest of the week!

Ich liebe Buecher, aber.... - I love books but....

Danke nochmal!

...after reading for a while these tend to get to heavy for me to hold upright. Not very good in terms of my chronic carpal tunnel syndrome. I found this out the hard way after reading three bigger books in a row :(. Our youngest asked for an E-reader for Christmas and we happily got him one. I was able to test if I could handle technology and weight. I could and since I still had some Christmas money left over I now own one from Sony. One still has to hold the E-reader while reading in bed, but I found a solution on Pinterest even before owning one. Fabric, filling and sewing machine got gathered quickly and in no time our daughter had stitched together two pretty holders. Mine is big enough to hold books and use a mini light as well.
With small alterations she used this tutorial. Thanks again!

Eine wunderschoene Restwoche wuenscht!

Frohes Neues Jahr - Happy New Year! Simple White

Neues Jahr, neuer Anlauf?

Sieben Sachen - Die Zweiundreissigste - 7 Things No. 32

While Mr. H. gave into my nagging followed my wish and diligently painted the spare room, I busied myself with other things then just lolling on the sofa with him. Offspring's moving out result in new possibilities in utilizing rooms. If another one off them is relocating this house will be way to big. Here are 7 things for which I used my hands today - more info over at Frau Liebe's blog, she had the genius idea!

BC Trip 1. Tag - Day 1

Sheraton Wall Centre- Eingang bei Nacht  - entrance at night

As promised more details about our trip to British Columbia. You might remember me mentioning that Mr. H. won that trip in a Tourism B.C. contest (he is THE ONE). Once figured out a week that all 5 of us could get off the planning began. Thanks to the web (and our organized daughter) we had a bunch of suggestions really soon. Our contact person on the other end did her best to fit all of those in. That was very sweet, but would have been really stressful.
End of June we started to our most likely last trip in this constellation. Since we leave in the Eastern part of Canada and B.C. is on the West Coast, we had about 5000 km (3100 miles) to cover. With a stop in Toronto it took us about as long as a flight to Europe. Once arrived it Vancouver a shuttle brought us from the Airport to the car rental place where we got a nice big van with lots of room for 5 adults including luggage. We also received a huge binder with plenty of road maps, info's, tickets and restaurant gift cards. Finally we took off to our hotel, due to the time difference of 4 hours we were pretty exhausted and wanted to have dinner too. At our first hotel, the Sheraton Wall Centre, we stayed for 3 night. The kids had their own room, but with a connecting door (which they didn't seem to like ;o)). The Glowbal Grill was within walking distance so we left the van in the garage (where it stayed the remaining Vancouver days). After we ate our way thru our gift card  (awesome food btw), we literally slumped on our beds after the short stroll back.

Fortsetzung folgt....to be continued...

Habt noch eine tolle restliche Woche! Have an awesome rest of the week!

Harz aus Kleidung entfernen - How to remove tree sap from clothing

Our youngest son worked in a summer camp for most off the season as kitchen staff and in other areas. On top of the "surfer-look" (tan and lightened hair) he brought home dirty laundry every weekend ;o). During the last week their group went to a "tree-go", an aerial adventure course. Nature is beautiful, tree sap on light shorts (staff clothing) not so much. Thanks to Pinterest I found a solution, one of these tips seemed promising (peanut butter is supposed to work too, but he already had enough grease stains in his clothes). It took me about a week before I was brave enough to tackle the stains. Our daughter still had an untouched small hand sanitizing gel from a recent trip- normally we only use soap around here, because everyone has sensitive skin. Simply rub the gel in the stain (you might want to carefully scratch off thicker blobs), let it sit for a little and throw it in with your regular laundry.

7 Sachen die Einunddreisszigste - 7 Things No. 31

Was habe ich also dies ganze Zeit so gemacht?

After a long absence finally a new post. I followed your blogs during this busy summer. What I did during this time? Well, lets see, here are a few things :
7 awesome days we spend in B.C., a wonderful trip for all of us that Mr. H. won (more in another post). One of me best girlfriends from Germany visited for almost 3 weeks. Work is still busy, which is great, because it doesn't get boring. But in the evenings I'm tired and my thoughts are all over the place.

 Zucchini durchgeschnitten und ausgehoehlt -

Canada Day 2012

Canada Day (1.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Canada Day (July 1st) is for us what the 4th of July is for our big brother across the border. This year we celebrate the 145. Birthday of this great nation! There will be an abundance of decorations in our national colors, red and white. Most stores have special deals from clothing, to meat for the big BBQ all the way to cars (my new to me one is not red ;o)).

On Sunday we will be in Vancouver, British Columbia and watch the fireworks from Canada Place later in the evening. How big our home country really is one notices in the time change going there, B.C. is four hours behind New Brunswick (Germany is 5 hours ahead). The flight will take us about the same time then visiting family and friends back in Germany!

Canada's National Anthem will be song in English or French, depending on the preference. (for text and video see above).

Habt ein wundervolles Wochenende! Happy (long) weekend everyone!

Wann wirds mal wieder richtig Sommer? - When will I see you again (summer)

Summer - according to the calendar the season that's on for about a week now. We've had quite some rain showers in the past couple of days, but the ground really needed it after a short lived heat spell. I'll be happy when the temperatures are in the 70's again, I enjoy sitting outside on the deck in the evenings after work.
The project for our bedroom which I started on Sunday isn't finished yet, but I'll take a picture once it's done.
Until then some pictures from our garden.
From Saturday on we'll spend a week in British Columbia (on Canada's west coast) and I hope to bring back lots of beautiful pictures - if I can keep the camera calm enough while I shake with fear (of heights). It's not flat here either, but for me - coming from the "Northern German flatland's" the mountains there are mighty high!

Habt noch eine schoene Restwoche! Have a great rest of the week!

7 Sachen die Dreissigste - 7 Things No. 30

Despite crappy weather outside I wasn't highly motivated to do house cleaning or other fancy indoor actions. Inbetween computer and reading breaks my hands did come to use, so once more 7 things that I used them for. Based on Frau Liebe's idea.

Mach die Muecke - Bug Off!

Welcome Margo! Thanks for following, enjoy your time here!

Man braucht:

Welcome Margo! Thanks for following, enjoy your time here!

There is one kind of living creature that must have been really, really happy about the mild winter and the rainy spring  - mosquitoes. These little bloodsucking vampires have a tendency to live in the wet areas around our woods (which we have a LOT of in Canada). Our youngest son is working as a junior counselor in a camp this summer and during staff training the past couple of days they got a good taste of him - literally - his legs where full of bites. I bought Off! last summer and he reacted to it so this year I tried the brand from our local drug mart - same reaction. There is a long list of chemical ingredients in both and the smell is just beyond stinky....Thanks to Pinterest I think I found a solution to our problem. I made a combination of the recipes here, here and here.

You need:
1  small spray bottle (travel size: 100ml / ~ 3.4 oz)
10 drops of each lavender oil and tee tree oil
30 drops of citronella oil
witch hazel (or almond oil or rubbing alcohol - one recipe even suggests vodka ;o))
Put the oils in the bottle and fill up with the witch hazel, shake well. The finished product looks slightly cloudy and smells good. It applies easy and doesn't stay on top of your skin. He is not reacting to it, yeah!

We will find out how effective it is once we dropped the junior off in camp again Sunday and he's been there a couple of nights. I have high hopes after reading the comments under the 3 recipes. The tea tree oil is supposed to be effective against ticks - I know our youngest, he'll forget to check every night if he has little "attachments"!
The first week in July all of us will be outdoors a lot close to water, more willing test objects. I'm also curious how effective the mix will be to keep the black flies away because I react really bad to their bites.

The eo's are not cheap, but I mixed 3 bottles and hardly used any oil, most likely we should have enough beyond the summer - the store bought chemical mixes are not cheap in the long run either and the not friendly to our skin or the environment.

Ich wuensche Euch ein tolles Wochenende! Have a happy weekend!
