Advent Calendar - Adventskalender

This will be most likely the last Christmas Season, that we will have all three kids living with us (don't let me get sentimental please). So instead of a store bought calendar with gross chocolate I decided to pull it off one more time and make them one. Over the years we had many variations, but the most loved by me are the ones I used the wooden wreath for. Typically I was hiding in our bedroom or the basement the night before December 1st and wrapped 24 or even 3x24 packages with all kinds of yummy treats and little gifts or notes etc. in them. Not this year, I was way ahead of the game and finished it over a week ago. Yeah me! And the mean Mom I can be, it's hanging in the living room since ;o)

Dies wird wohl die letzte Vorweihnachtszeit sein, in der alle Kinder mit uns unter einem Dach leben. Deshalb wollte ich ihnen ein letztes Mal einen gemeinsamen Kalender basteln. Im Laufe der Zeit hatten wir viele verschiedene Arten selbst gemachter Schmuckstuecke, am besten gefiel mir aber immer noch der Holzring. Normalerweise habe ich mich am Abend vorm 1. Dezember im Schlafzimmer oder Keller versteckt und entweder24 oder 3x24 Paeckchen gepackt. Diesmal war ich selbst von mir ueberrascht und bin schon seit einer ueber einer Woche fertig! Hurrah! Er haengt auch schon seitdem im Wohnzimmer, weil ich auch als Mama mal fies sein kann ;o)!

So here is how I did it: (English is not my first language, so I hope I write in a way that makes sense)
I bought brown paper sandwich bags, gold and silver markers and stamps and punches with Christmas motives at our local Dollar Store. All other materials (paint, ribbon, wreath, regular hole punch) I had on hand. First I took the gold and silver markers and wrote numbers on one side of each paper bag. You could probably do it prettier, but I just wanted to go fast bold and big.

After deciding on the layout I folded the top part of the bags down far enough to be able to use the Christmas motive punches one the left and right side of the folded part. I had a Santa as a third motive, but the punch kept tearing the bag up. I also used a regular hole punch and used it to make one hole in the middle of the folded part (you would want it sturdy for the ribbon)

So wirds gemacht: im Dollar Store (sowas wie 1€-Laden) habe ich braune Fruehstueckspapiertueten, goldenen und silbernen Edding, Locher und Stempel mit Weihnachtmotiven gekauft. Alle anderen Materialien (Farbe, Geschenkband, Holzring und normalen Locher) hatte ich bereits. Mit den Stiften habe ich grosse Zahlen auf eine Seite der Tuete geschrieben. Danach wird der obere Rand so umgefaltet, dass noch genug Platz fuer die Motivlocher verbleibt. Am rechten und linken Rand im gefalteten Teil je einmal lochen. Danach mit einem normalen Locher EIN Loch mittig durch den gefalteten und geraden Teil der Tuete machen. Dies sorgt dafuer, dass es anschliessend schoen stabil ist, wenn das Paeckchen am Band aufgehangen wird.

Dollar Store supplied me with 9 foam stamps in the bag, so I choose 3 motives for each color I picked (red, green and a lighter orange). Just use a paint or foam brush and put a little color on the motive, not to much, almost like you would do with a stencil. Put as many motives on the bag as you like, I went with three each bag and tried to give it some variation. I could have stamped the bottom of the bags too, but since my kids are all taller than me, there was no necessity.

In der Tuete mit den Stempeln befanden sich genau 9 Motive, was dann 3 je gewaehlter Farbe (rot, gruen und ein dunkleres orange) ergab. Mit Haar- oder Schaumstoffpinsel vorsichtig ein wenig Farbe aufbringen (nicht mehr als wenn Ihr eine Schablone tupft). Ihr koennt soviele aufbringen wie Ihr moechtet, ich habe mich fuer drei je Tuete entschieden und auch versucht, ein wenig Abwechslung beim Stempeln zu erreichen. Da meine Kinder alle drei groesser sind als ich, habe ich den Boden der Tuete nicht gestempelt.

After all the paint is dry, simply unfold all the bags and fill them with whatever you like. Since my kids read my blog I can't tell you what I put in them, but it's more than just candy. For little kids you could use small books, tiny toys and such, like I did when they were smaller. One year I divided a board game into 24 packages and left the board itself for the 24th. After filling all of them, tie some ribbon to the hole in the middle, in a way, that the kids can't peek. Now hang them wherever you have enough room (i.e. curtain rod, stair case railing). I still have a wooden wreath that I bought years ago from a local artisan that did amazing things with wood. To make sure it is not one huge bulk of packages I used different length ribbon.


Wenn die Farbe getrocknet ist, faltet man die Beutel auseinander und fuellt sie nach Eurer Wahl. Da meine Kinder den Blog lesen, kann ich an dieser Stelle nicht verraten was, aber es ist nicht nur Suesses. Fuer kleinere Kinder eignen sich prima Pixie-Buechlein, kleine Spielwaren u.a. Ein Jahr habe ich ein Brettspiel in 24 Paeckchen geteilt, wobei ich das Spielbrett fuer den 24. aufgehoben habe. Wenn alle Beutel gefuellt sind, zieht man Paketband durch das Loch in der Mitte und zwar so, dass die Kinder nicht spionieren koennen. ;o) Anschliessend kann man eine Gardinenstange, das Treppengelaender oder wie ich einen Kranz zum Aufhaengen der Paeckchen nehmen. Den Kranz habe ich vor Jahren bei einem lokalen Kunsthandwerker erstanden, welcher wunderschoene Dinge mit Holz gemacht hat. Damit ich nicht einen riesen Klumpen am Kranz haengen habe, sind die Baender unterschiedlich lang.

I put some tiny wood ornaments on top and was done without stressing myself for once!
Noch ein paar luette Holzornamente obendrauf gestellt und endlich mal ohne Stress rechtzeitig fertig!
